What is HYROX? The Ultimate Fitness Race Explained
HYROX is the global, standardised fitness race that combines running and functional workouts. Each HYROX race follows the same format: participants complete a 1 km run and then tackle a functional workout station, repeating this sequence eight times. In total you'll cover 8 km of running interspersed with eight different exercises, testing your strength, endurance and mental grit.
How HYROX works:
The race is held indoors in arenas around the world. Everyone competes on the same course, so you can compare your performance against athletes globally. The eight workout stations typically include:
- Ski Erg
- Sled Push
- Sled Pull
- Burpee Broad Jumps
- Rowing
- Farmers Carry
- Sandbag Lunges
- Wall Balls
Between each station you run 1 km, making HYROX a hybrid of functional training and endurance racing.
Who it's for:
HYROX welcomes athletes of all levels. Whether you're a CrossFit competitor, runner or weekend warrior, the race is designed so that everyone can take part. There are individual and doubles categories along with pro divisions for those chasing fast times.
Why it's popular:
Because the format is standardised, you can measure your progress from event to event. The indoor setting also creates a unique atmosphere – think loud music, cheering crowds and competition energy.
How to prepare:
To succeed at HYROX you'll need to train both your running and functional strength. Practise each of the workout stations and build your aerobic base. In training and on race day, having the right gear makes a difference. Our Cróga backpacks offer durable wet and dry compartments, patch panels and space for everything you need – from shoes and change of clothes to recovery snacks. They're the perfect companion for your HYROX journey.
